Vikings Bury the Barons, 35-0
Wayne Hunley
Bethesda, MD - - Whitman bounced back from last week’s loss at Springbrook with a dominating performance against their cross town rivals, BCC. The Vikings played consistent defense, forcing four turnovers, and took control of the game offensively in the second half, causing the issue to be settled by early in the fourth quarter. Michael Flack ran for three touchdowns, Val Djidotor bounced back from last week’s injury to turn in another punishing 100 yard performance, and Arsalan Nejad tossed in a couple of timely runs.
BCC came out of the gates with some momentum, converting a third and long to take the opening drive into Whitman territory, but the drive ended when Max Sessions jumped in front of a slant and made a beautiful running catch. After an exchange of punts, Whitman embarked on an 89 yard, nearly eight minute drive that established control of the game to the Viking offensive line. Arsalan Nejad got the drive going with two rushes that covered 20 yards, and a nifty shuffle pass to Djidotor followed by a Stephen Werner catch put the ball into Baron territory. The play of the drive was a fourth down conversion where Whitman showed a new look, with Weston Hanessian playing quarterback and Michael Flack splitting out wide. Flack caught a ball deflected by a Baron defender to keep the drive alive, and Flack then took control of finishing the drive after a penalty put the Vikings at first and goal from the 22. He hit Nejad for a completion to the 11, and eventually carried the Vikings into the end zone with three rushes.
BCC threatened to tie the score on the ensuing drive, overcoming a Tommy Scholl sack to set themselves up with a first down at the Viking 25. Justin Knighton snuffed out the drive with a an interception, returning the ball to midfield and putting the Vikings into the locker room with a 7-0 lead.
The Vikings put the game away with a three quick touchdowns in the third quarter. After opening the quarter with a nice touchdown drive that featured a 28 yard catch by Werner and a 10 yard touchdown scamper by Nejad, Whitman got the ball back with a nifty interception by Flack off a Knighton deflection. Djidotor then broke two tackles on a 45 yard touchdown run. The Vikings added two touchdowns in quick succession off of a stalled drive and a fumble by BCC, and the rout was on as Whitman’s offensive line created wide running lanes for whoever was carrying the ball.
Whitman goes into a very tough mid season stretch of games with a 3-2 record and a feeling of regaining their offensive identity.
