Vikings Dominate Blair
Wayne Hunley
Silver Spring, MD - - Rumors that Michael Flack was sighted cooking hamburgers in the concession stand at halftime were unfounded, but that is about the only thing he did not do on a blustery night at Montgomery Blair. With Zac Morton injured, the senior QB and safety was asked to step in on defense and special teams even more than usual. He responded on all counts, running for two touchdowns, throwing for one, intercepting two passes, and just for good measure booted a 63 yard punt. Combine those efforts with a dominating performance up front on both sides of the ball and the usual hard running by Val Djidotor and Alkaly Soumah (stepping in nicely for an injured Arsalan Nejad), and the Vikes ended up coasting to a comfortable 35-15 win.
Whitman looked to be on the way to a rout early when the Vikes took the opening kickoff and methodically worked the ball down the field with a series of Djidotor and Flack runs, ending with an 11 yard scamper by the senior running back. Blair’s outmanned front seven was on its heels all night against Whitman’s size up front. Blair, however, kept the game close through much of the first half. Peter Gondor and Kenyon Bundy ran hard despite Vikes defenders consistently getting into the backfield, and Kevin Dupalis made a spectacular over the shoulder catch near the end of the first quarter to keep a drive alive and put Blair in position to tie the game. Flack’s first interception ended that threat. The Blazers were also kept in the game by consistently bizarre officiating, including a decision to call back a beautiful 75 yard touchdown pass from Weston Hanessian to Val Djidotor, where the QB was ruled to have been over the line of scrimmage when he released the ball despite clearly being in the backfield. The Vikes were still able to go into halftime with a two score lead, as Derek Rosenberg recovered a fumble late in the half and Flack completed a short drive with a quarterback draw.
Blair cut the lead to seveb with an impressive opening second half drive, mostly behind Pondor’s tough running and some missed tackles by the Vikes’ defenders. Whitman answered quickly with a 45 yard touchdown run by Flack after a Djidotor kickoff return across midfield. Blair quickly drove back into Whitman territory, but Mark Hunley forced the Blazers into third and long with a tackle in the backfield, and Flack intercepted the ensuing pass, which hung in the air longer than most punts before he grabbed it in the end zone. A few minutes later, Flack hit Stephen Werner in the flat and the senior tight end broke two tackles before scoring on a 15 yard touchdown pass. Whitman was firmly in control of the game at that point, scoring once more. Blair’s second score came with only seconds left in the game.
Flack, Djidotor, and Soumah ended up combining for over 300 yards rushing for the game.
