Viking Coaches (Updated 10/2009).

      Jim Kuhn, Head Coach, Varsity Football     

Jim Kuhn begins his third year as Head Coach and steward of the Whitman Football program. Coach Kuhn brings his extensive football coaching experience to a job that is incredibly demanding. This will be his 13th year coaching football at Whitman. Coach Kuhn also headed up Whitman's Varsity Baseball team for 10 years.

His work on the field is rivaled only by his work in the classroom. For the past 15 years, Coach Kuhn has taught in Whitman's Math Department. His dedication has earned him the respect of his peers, students, and parents.

Coach Jim Kuhn named Redskin High School Coach of the Week (10/5/2009).

Coach Kuhn is a native of Battle Creek, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with a B.S. in Kinesiology. He received his post graduate degree in Teaching from Western Michigan and pursued additional studies at Johns Hopkins.

Coach Kuhn and his wife, Kate, have been married 19 years and have two children.  Henry is a junior at Whitman and Jake is a 6th grader at Pyle Middle School.  

   John Floyd, Varsity Line Coach     

Coach John Floyd enters his 4th year as a football coach at Whitman. He works with the Offensive and Defensive lines.

The Whitman class of 2002 alum was awarded three varsity letters and selected as MVP in 2001.

Coach Floyd graduated from McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland with a BA in History. He was also a four-year letterman as a football player during his collegiate career.

He would like to further his education by earning a Masters degree in Special Education. Currently he works as a substitute teacher at Whitman.

      Andy Lee, Varsity Defensive Coordinator     

Coach Lee is responsible for all aspects of the Fighting Vikings defensive efforts. A 2001 graduate of Whitman, Coach Lee pursued his secondary education at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. He graduated in 2005 with a BA in Exercise Science/Physical Education.

For the past four years, Coach Lee has taught Physical Education at Julius West Middle School in Rockville, as well as coaching Varsity football at Whitman.

While attending Whitman, Coach Lee played both varsity football and basketball. He was selected to the All-Gazette football team his senior year along with being named the Defensive Most Valuable Player. During his junior year, he was named Special Teams MVP. He continued his love of athletics by playing four years of collegiate football at McDaniel, where he had the honor of being a two-year football captain. During his senior year, he was named to the All Centennial Conference football team.

    Jay Mooney, Varsity Running Backs     

and Linebackers Coach

Jay Mooney has been coaching football at Whitman for the past four seasons. This year, he is working with the varsity running backs and linebackers. Coach Mooney has more than 20 years of experience coaching college and high school football and basketball.

He is currently teaching 5th grade at Seven Locks Elementary School. 

In his spare time, he actively participates in the Big Brother program and the Montgomery County Recreation programs.

Coach Mooney earned a B.A. in Sociology and a Masters degree in Education from Salisbury State University.

The Rockville native graduated from Good Counsel High School. He's a father of two; Trevor, (14)and Brianna, (12).  He currently lives in Germantown.

    Dave Fyock, Junior Varsity Head Coach     

Coach Dave Fyock begins his third year as Head Junior Varsity coach this season. Affectionately known as Slick, Coach Fyock knows Whitman well, having graduated from the school in 1984.

This is Dave's fourth year at Whitman as a football coach; however, he is no rookie to the coaching profession, having actively coached football in the Maplewood Sports Association for 20 years.

Coach Fyock has one daughter, Kendall (16), and lives in Ashburn, Virginia.

    Derek Manon, JV Wide Receivers     

and Defensive Backs Coach

Coach Manon grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended Mount Lebanon High School. He graduated from Saint Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania.  He played football (wide receiver) for four years. 

Coach Manon is in his 11th year as a teacher in Montgomery County. Currently, he teaches Algebra and Geometry at North Bethesda Middle School.

While Coach Manon is a second-year football coach at Whitman, he is a seasoned wrestling coach with 8 years of experience under his belt. He has been a part of Whitman's successful wrestling program for the past four years. This year will be his third year as Head Coach of the wrestling team. Coach Manon was named the 2008 Gazette Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Coach Manon married his wife Sharon in July 2007.

    Dan Wolff, JV Defensive Coordinator     

Coach Wolff is the JV defensive Coordinator. He brings his enthusiasm and knowledge to the upstart Vikings.  In addition to football, Coach Wolff.  He is also an instructor and Head Coach with the Next Level Baseball program in Bethesda.

The Whitman Class of 2001 alum and Bethesda native attended Bridgton Academy in Maine for a post-graduate year of study before moving on to High Point University in High Point, North Carolina.  He graduated in 2006 with a B.S. in Sports Management and a minor in English; and a second minor in Management Information Systems. A three-sport star at Whitman, Coach Wolff excelled in football, basketball, and baseball for the Vikings.

Wolff has is currently working as a para-educator in the Mark Twain Satellite program at Whitman.

Coach Wolff lives in Glover Park, Washington, DC.

   Jon Gorman JV Assistant Coach     

Coach Gorman is currently in his first year at Whitman as an assistant coach under Coach Kuhn. Coach Gorman graduated from Walt Whitman High School in 1998 where he excelled on the football field for the Vikings. 

Coach Gorman is excited to join Whitman's knowledgeable coaching staff and to help continue its winning tradition.

Andy Wetzel, Athletic Director     

Mr. Wetzel begins his second year as the Director of Athletics at Walt Whitman. AD Wetzel has been a teacher at Whitman for 11 years, teaching Tech Ed and Physical Education.

He is a 1993 graduate of Millersville (Pa) University with a BS in Education.

Mr. Wetzel has coached volleyball, football and wrestling at both the JV and Varsity levels. In 2005, he was named as Coach of the Year for leading the Whitman Varsity wrestling team to an overall record of 17-1 and also the Maryland State Championship.

AD Wetzel said, Whitman has a great athletic program, staffed with dedicated coaches who serve for the love of sport and not for money they care about the kids.

Mr. Wetzel hails from Pine Grove, Pennsylvania.
